In 2010 the Midwest Eye Laboratories Woodbury, LLC and Midwest Eye Laboratories Sioux Falls, LLC were created to better serve our patients needs in these locations. Tim, along with his team, has been dedicating 100% of their time to these locations. This has allowed for the continued superb quality that we have become known for, and for the continued research and development to keep us on the cutting edge of our field. Our Story

Practice opened

Midwest Eye Laboratories was formed in 1986 by Michael Barrett and Wolfgang Kuss to provide the best possible service for those in need of an eye prosthesis.

Team grows

In 1996 Timothy Barrett joined this team to carry on the tradition of fabricating and fitting the finest custom ocular prosthesis available.

Multiple locations

Over the more than 32 years our practice grew to several locations spanning the upper Midwest.

Meet The Team

Timothy J. Barrett BCO BADO
Ocularist

Tim Barrett is a Board Certified Ocularist (BCO) by the National Examining Board of Ocularists. He is also a Board Approved Diplomat Ocularist (BADO) by the American Society of Ocularists and is currently serving on their Board of Directors. With over 27 years experience in the field of Ocularistry, Tim has the knowledge and tools for fitting all types of eye prosthetics and scleral cover shells.

One of Tim’s specialties is the fitting of pediatric conformers for the treatment of congenital microphthalmia and anophthalmia. He will take the time necessary to explain the process and provide our services in a caring and relaxed environment.

Tim currently works out of our Twin Cities, Sioux Falls, and Fargo locations. In his spare time Tim enjoys canoeing, weight training and fishing with his wife Julie.

Julie Barrett
Ocularist Intern

Julie is originally from the Rochester, MN area and graduated with a BA in Finance from University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. With over 15 years of experience working in the health insurance industry, she has gained the knowledge and understanding on how to best coordinate insurance coverage for our patients.

Julie is currently enrolled in the American Society of Ocularists (ASO) College of Ocularistry training program. During her five year apprenticeship she will continue to gain the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate care to our patients. Julie especially loves working with children and thoroughly enjoys working with our pediatric patients during the fitting process.

In her free time, she enjoys cooking, working out, and enjoying time at the lake with her husband Tim.

Liana Blahnik
Ocularist Intern
Liana is currently enrolled in the American Society of Ocularists College of Ocularistry (COO) as a supervised intern. Liana is originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and graduated with a BS in Neuroscience from Wisconsin Lutheran College located in Milwaukee, WI. Being an intern at Midwest Eye Labs allows her to combine her love for anatomy, the arts, and the healthcare field. Liana has always known that she wants to help people, and she found the perfect place to do so at Midwest Eye Laboratories! In her spare time, she enjoys reading, painting, cooking, and going back to the Upper Peninsula to visit family.
Jess F.
Office Manager/Insurance Coordinator
Jess is our office manager/insurance coordinator at Midwest Eye Laboratories. After attending the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire and graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, she then attended the Mayo Clinic Cytotechnology program in Rochester MN. She became a board certified cytotechnologist and worked in that field for almost 18 years. Jess enjoys spending time with her husband, Jim, and three children, Avery, Quincy and Isla. She is also an avid quilter that enjoys sharing her completed quilts with friends and family.
Melissa W.
Medical Administration/Insurance Specialist
Melissa is the medical administration/insurance specialist at Midwest Eye Laboratories. She attended Chippewa Valley Technical College and earned an Associate degree in Health Information Technology and is a Registered Health Information Technician. She has been working in the health industry for over 20 years. Melissa enjoys spending time with her husband, William, and her two children, Cole and Kaci. In her spare time she also enjoys reading, and watching movies.
