We are Ocularists, specializing in the field of ocular prosthetics, including
all aspects of the custom fitting and fabrication of artificial eyes and Scleral Shells.
This process should be performed by Midwest Eye Laboratories every six months to help maintain the wearing comfort and to extend the life of the prosthesis material.
A clear acrylic prosthesis used to maintain the socket structure. Most commonly used in the treatment of Anophthalmia and Microphthalmia in our pediatric patients.
This is a NO CHARGE service which allows our Ocularist to explain the benefits of our prosthetic eyes and to address any questions or concerns you may have.
An impression of the socket is taken with an alginate material to provide the posterior (back) dimensions of the prosthesis. This is a pain free process, and some patients say it is a soothing sensation.
A wax model is fabricated from the impression and is sculpted to achieve the best possible symmetry with lid opening and direction of the remaining eye.
The prosthesis is hand painted while observing the patient’s companion eye. This involves matching the iris color, limbal blend, scleral tinting, and veining.
The prosthesis is polished and fit, to determine if any adjusting is necessary. We want every patient to have the best possible ocular prosthesis. We believe in using a very straight forward approach, this leads to a full understanding of the process and a better understanding of the final outcome.
